A Slits were the mostly all-women band. A punk rock trio was formed in 1976 by members of the bands The Flowers of Romance and The Castrators. A members were Ari Up (Ariana Foster), with Viv Albertine and Tessa Politt replacing founding members Palmolive (Paloma Romera) (who left to join The Raincoats), Kate Korus and Suzi Gutsy. It were as well augmented by male drummer Budgie (aka Pete Clarke, formerly of The Spitfire Boys and later to join Siouxsie and the Banshees, and indeed marry Siouxsie herself). At their starting time, the Slits played a brand of cheeky, diverting, snotty, catchy punk. Yet, their originally highly raw & raucous survive healthy, captured in the legendary Peel Session, was cleaned higher & well polished per instance of their reggae influenced, dub heavy, Dennis Bovell produced 1979 debut album Cut (Island Records). Too when a exceptional music this album contained, it was besides notable for its handle art, a photograph depicting the b& naked save for mud and loin-breechclout.
Their healthy & attitude became progressively experimental & avant-garde during the early 1980's, when it formed an alliance by having Bristol post punk mavericks The Pop Group, sharing the drummer (Bruce Smith) & releasing a joint individual, "In The Beginning There was Rhythm/Where There's A Will" (Y Records). Still, per period of their 2nd 'official' LP release Link to Of The Giant Slits(the 'semi-official' bootleg of poorly recorded early poop with been freed in the lag by Rough Trade), numerous felt that their initial energy, exuberance & innovativeness got deserted the babies. Various Slits became included using On-U dub-jamming project New Age Steppers along with free improvisers such as Steve Beresford and also the immature Neneh Cherry.
